아/어지다 Grammar Formula

*To form words with this grammar, first remove the 다 at the end of each adjective. Then look at the formula below:

1. If the adjective ends in a vowel: ㅏ, ㅗ then it is pasted with 아지다. Example:

작다 → 작아지다 (getting smaller)
많다 → 많아지다 (more and more)

2. If the adjective ends in a vowel other than ㅏ/ㅗ such asㅓ, ㅜ, ㅣ, etc, it is pasted with 어지다. Example:

크다 → 커지다 (getting bigger)
적다 → 적어지다 (less and less)

3. If the adjective ends in 하다, it is changed to 해지다. Example:

조용하다 → 조용해지다 (getting quieter)
행복하다 → 행복해지다 (getting happier)

Important:

Usually this grammar will become past tense in the sentence, as the change of state in the adjective in question has already occurred. Take a look at the example sentences below:

Example Sentence:

실내공기가 훨씬 깨끗해졌어요. silnae gong-giga hwolssin kkaekkeuthaejeosseoyo. (The indoor air became much cleaner.)

매일 아침 운동을 하니까 건강해졌어요. maeil achim undong-eul hanikka geon-ganghaejeosseoyo. (I’m getting healthier because I exercise every morning.)

유나 씨가 뚱뚱해졌어요. yuna si-ga tungtunghaejeosseoyo. (yuna is getting fatter now)

Important:

The grammar 아/어지다 can also be pasted with the grammar 고 있다, which means it shows the present tense. So by adding this grammar, it will show a change of state that is happening right now. Take a look at the following

Example:

날씨가 점점 더워지고 있어요. nalssiga jeomjeom deowojigo isseoyo. (The weather is gradually getting hotter)

공장이 점점 깨끗해지고 있어요. gongjang-i jeomjeom kkaekkeuthaejigo isseoyo. (the factory is gradually getting cleaner because it is cleaned every day)

Well, that’s the explanation of Korean 아/어지다 grammar. You can improve the above lesson by practicing making sentences that use this grammar. The tip is to first prepare a list of adjectives such as smart (똑똑하다), diligent (부지런하다), tall (키가 크다), etc., then change them by using 아/어지다 grammar in a sentence. Hope this helps you learn.
